The Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was found to have illegally cut off funding from ChatGPT after scanning for 'references to Asians and Indigenous peoples.'

The U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was established in January 2025 under the Trump administration. For a time, Elon Musk led the organization, which aimed to cut budgets by reforming government agencies and reviewing subsidies. The DOGE's decisions faced widespread dissatisfaction and opposition, but on May 7, 2026, a U.S. district court ruled injunction against the DOGE's decision to cut over $100 million in subsidies.

The DOGE decided to revoke more than 1,400 grants that had been approved by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in 2025. The total amount of the revoked grants reached $100 million (approximately 16 billion yen).

Recipients of the grants filed a lawsuit against the DOGE for cutting off their funding, and on May 7, 2026, a federal district court ruled in favor of reversing the decision to cut off funding. Judge Colleen McHon stated that 'there is no doubt that the DOGE's review process did not conform to, and had no resemblance to, the NEH's normal grant review process.'

According to ABC News, a former DOGE employee testified in court that 'ChatGPT and DEI keywords were used to determine which organizations were subject to funding cuts.' Judge McHon stated that 'it is illegal to treat applications such as 'the history of the Black civil rights movement,' 'Jewish testimonies about the Holocaust,' 'the often-forgotten experience of Asian Americans,' 'the shameful treatment of Native American children,' and 'references to women' as symbols of incompetence or waste,' pointing out that there were serious errors in the DOGE's selection of organizations for funding cuts.

Although it was reported that DOGE would disband in November 2025, DOGE has denied these reports.
