OpenAI has removed a page that stated its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), following a similar trend of major companies abandoning DEI initiatives.

According to TechCrunch, a page (https://openai.com/commitment-to-dei/) that previously stated, 'We are committed to ongoing investments in DEI and making continuous improvements to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive organization' has now redirected to a different page ( https://openai.com/building-dynamic-teams/ ).

The new page doesn't use the word 'diversity' but talks about 'people from different backgrounds,' and says, 'We believe the strongest ideas emerge when they are tested, debated, and refined by people with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We encourage a culture of curiosity where ideas are challenged.'

TechCrunch reports that it's unclear exactly when this change was made, but the previous page was in existence and cited by ABC News at least until January 22, 2025. Then, by January 27, 2025, a new page was created talking about 'people of different backgrounds.'

TechCrunch asked OpenAI whether the website changes were an indication of a reversal or change in its internal processes, but did not receive a response.

OpenAI is not alone in distancing itself from the DEI language, and this trend is strongly influenced by Donald Trump, who took office as the US president on January 20, 2025.

On January 20, 2025, shortly after taking office, President Trump signed an executive order titled 'Abolish Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Incentives,' which abolished all DEI-based support measures promoted by former President Joe Biden and established guidelines that, in particular, hiring of government employees should be evaluated based on individual skills, performance, and diligence.

Meta decided to abolish DEI the week before President Trump was inaugurated, and announced policies such as eliminating the team that focuses on DEI and not offering preferential treatment in hiring based on DEI.

Google has announced that it will gradually scale back its DEI program, and has removed the phrase 'We make diversity, equity and inclusion a part of everything we do' from its 2024 annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on February 4, 2025, which was included from 2021 to 2023.

Additionally, NASA and other organizations are reportedly reviewing their DEI policies.

In response to the executive order, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that she was directing the Department of Justice to 'investigate, eliminate, and punish unlawful DEI programs conducted by private companies that receive federal funding.'
