Apple has been ordered to pay approximately 39 billion yen in total to customers for failing to include AI Siri in its new iPhones.

Apple had announced its own personal AI, ' Apple Intelligence, ' in 2024, and planned to make an 'enhanced Siri' available in iOS 18. However, repeated reports indicated that development of the enhanced Siri was facing difficulties, and it was announced that the release would be delayed until 2026. As a result of this delay, Apple was sued in a class-action lawsuit for 'misleading customers about the availability of Apple Intelligence features,' and it has now been revealed that Apple has agreed to pay $250 million (approximately 39 billion yen) in a settlement.

At WWDC24 in June 2024, Apple announced its own personal AI, 'Apple Intelligence.' Apple Intelligence was released in English with iOS 18.1 in October of the same year, and some of the features announced at WWDC24 became available. Initially, an advanced version of Siri based on Apple Intelligence was also planned to be available in iOS 18. This advanced version of Siri, also known as 'LLM Siri,' was reported to be released in 2026 or 2027, but in March 2025, an Apple spokesperson officially confirmed that the release was taking longer than expected, and issued a statement saying that although it was planned to be released in iOS 18.4, the rollout had been pushed back to 2026.

The delay in the improved Siri led to class-action lawsuits from shareholders and a recommendation from the US advertising standards authority to 'stop or correct' the 'available now' label on the Apple Intelligence page, among other problems.

Furthermore, in March 2025, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Apple on behalf of people who had purchased iPhones and other devices, alleging that 'Apple's advertising, using the internet, television, and other broadcast media, created a clear and reasonable consumer expectation that these innovative features would be available at the launch of the iPhone.'

On May 6, 2026, Clarkson Law Firm, which filed the lawsuit, reported that it had won a $250 million (approximately 39 billion yen) settlement with Apple to resolve the case.

Based on the settlement terms, and subject to court approval, American citizens who purchased any iPhone 16 model or certain iPhone 15 models between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, may be able to file a claim for financial relief. The $250 million settlement secured by Clarkson Law Firm will become a non-refundable common fund, and consumers who file an approved claim within the deadline will receive between $25 and $95 per eligible device.

The settlement did not find Apple to be at fault, and Apple denies any wrongdoing. Apple spokesperson Marni Goldberg said in a statement, 'We have resolved this issue in order to continue focusing on what we do best: providing our users with the most innovative products and services.'
