'Gemini in Chrome,' an AI chatbot integrated into Google Chrome, will be open to non-paying users

Google is rolling out what it describes as the 'biggest update in the history of Google Chrome.' Until now, Gemini in Chrome, a feature that lets you directly access an AI chatbot integrated into Chrome, was only available to users with Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscriptions. Now, Gemini in Chrome is available to non-subscribers, and the feature has been significantly improved.

Gemini in Chrome is now available for Windows and Mac users in the United States who have their language settings set to English. A mobile version of Gemini in Chrome is also now available, starting with Android, which allows users to launch Gemini by holding down the power button. An iOS version is expected to be available soon.

Gemini in Chrome will be adding an 'agent' feature in the coming months that will take care of time-consuming tasks like weekly grocery shopping and hair appointments.

The update also makes it possible to link multiple tabs in Gemini in Chrome, allowing you to compare and summarize information across multiple websites and find the information you need, making it easier to plan trips and more.

Sometimes it can be hard to find what you need among the websites you've visited in the past, but by leaving it to 'Gemini in Chrome,' you can call up the site you need, such as 'What site did I find when I searched to buy a desk?'

The integration between 'Gemini in Chrome' and Google apps has also been strengthened. For example, if you're playing a YouTube video and wonder 'Where does this scene appear?', you can ask Gemini without switching tabs and it will find the answer.

Chrome's address bar (omnibox) will also provide quick access to AI mode, which Google describes as 'Google's most powerful AI search.' AI mode lets you ask long, complex questions and get helpful answers. You can also dig deeper by asking additional questions. This update will begin rolling out in the US in English in late September 2025, and will expand to more countries and languages in the coming weeks.

You can also now use Omnibox to ask questions about the entire page you're viewing, and Chrome will suggest relevant questions based on the context of the page to help you start your search. Contextual suggestions will be available in English in the US first, and will expand to more countries and languages over the coming weeks.

Google continues to expand its use of AI to protect users from threats and spam on the web, and Safe Browsing's Enhanced Protection mode already uses Gemini Nano. Going forward, the company will expand its protection to block sites that deceive users with fake virus warnings and giveaways.

Google Chrome now detects potentially spam and fraudulent notifications and lets you choose whether to view or unsubscribe from them. On Android, this reduces unwanted website notifications by approximately 3 billion per day.

Google Chrome now proactively warns you when your passwords may be compromised, and will soon go a step further with its AI-powered Password Agent feature, which will also let you change saved passwords with one click on participating sites like education platform Coursera, streaming service Spotify, and language learning site Duolingo.
