Google, the developer and provider of several essential Internet platforms such as Google Search, Chrome, and Android, has introduced on its blog how it is using AI technology to combat the latest scams on the Internet.

◆Google Search: Using AI to Prevent Search Fraud by Over 80%
Google Search uses AI to detect and block hundreds of millions of fraudulent search results every day. According to the Google Search Fraud Report , investments in AI-based fraud detection systems and improvements to classifiers have increased the number of fraudulent web pages detected by 20 times. Google claims that this ensures that search results on Google Search are legitimate and protects users from harmful websites that try to steal sensitive data.

Advances in AI have strengthened fraud prevention technology, making it possible to analyze vast amounts of text on the web, identify organized fraud campaigns, and detect new threats. For example, it has been observed that there has been a significant increase in bad actors on the web posing as airline customer service providers and deceiving people seeking help. Such fraudulent activity in search has already been reduced by more than 80% in Google Search, significantly reducing the risk of calling fraudulent phone numbers.

◆Chrome: Safe Browsing strengthened with Gemini Nano
According to Google, Chrome's

Safe Browsing 'Enhanced Protection' offers the highest level of security protection of any web browser, and is up to twice as safe against phishing and other fraudulent activities as the 'Standard Protection' option.

Safe Browsing's enhanced protection feature has introduced Gemini Nano, a desktop on-device large-scale language model (LLM), which will provide Safe Browsing's enhanced protection feature with an extra layer of security against online fraud.

The on-device approach will provide instant insight into risky websites and allow Google to address fraud that has never been seen before. Gemini Nano is 'ideally suited for this' because it can extract the diverse and complex nature of websites, Google wrote, 'enabling Google to respond quickly to new fraud methods.'

'We're already using this new AI-powered approach to help protect users from remote

tech support scams , one of the biggest online threats facing users today. Over time, we'll expand this protection to Android devices and to even more types of scams,' Google wrote.

◆Android: Fight scams, spam, and unwanted notifications
The risk of fraudulent sites doesn't end with the site itself. If you have notifications enabled for websites, malicious sites may try to trick you by flooding you with notifications. To prevent such malicious, spam, and misleading notifications, Chrome for Android has introduced a new AI-powered warning feature.

When an on-device machine learning model flags a notification, you'll see a warning and be given the option to unsubscribe or view the blocked content. If you think the warning was in error, you can also choose whether to allow notifications from that website in the future.

◆Android: Protect users from sophisticated phone and message scams
Scams often start with a seemingly harmless phone call or text message and then escalate into a dangerous situation. To protect Android users from these sophisticated scams, Google Messages and Google Phone are introducing on-device, AI-powered scam detection .
