In August 2025, a family filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT contributed to a child's suicide. In response to these issues, OpenAI announced four priority areas: expanding support for people in crisis situations, making it easier to contact emergency services and obtain professional help, enabling connections to trusted contacts, and strengthening protections for teenagers. The company revealed that it is making intensive efforts to introduce countermeasures by the end of 2025.

OpenAI has announced that it will implement parental control features by October 2025, ahead of the above measures.

The parental control feature allows parents to link their account to their teen's via email. Once linked, parents can manage their child's ChatGPT, including controlling how they interact with their teen by modeling behavioral rules based on their age. This control is on by default, and parents can also manage whether to disable memory and chat history.

Additionally, ChatGPT will be able to send notifications to parents when it detects that their child is in distress. The parental control feature will be guided by expert opinion to support trusting relationships between parents and teens.

Kate O'Loughlin, CEO of children's digital platform SuperAwesome, told the news site Axios, 'Everything cool and new on the internet is designed for adults, but kids always want to try it and find riskier environments. Platforms tend to put the responsibility of monitoring their kids solely on parents.'
