'Workspace Agents,' an AI agent for ChatGPT, has been released, enabling the automation of tasks such as email replies and code generation.

OpenAI has announced the integration of its AI agent, ' workspace agents ,' into ChatGPT. As of the time of writing, it is available as a research preview for Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans and will be free to use until May 6, 2026.

According to OpenAI, workspace agents is an evolution of ' GPTs ,' which allows for customization of ChatGPT. Based on the code generation AI Codex, it can automate many tasks performed at work, such as report creation, coding, and replying to emails.
Furthermore, workspace agents can follow the team's processes, seek approvals as needed, and facilitate smooth collaboration between tools. For example, a sales team can use workspace agents to automate the process of gathering detailed information from call notes and customer surveys, narrowing down new leads, and creating follow-up emails directly into the assigned contact's inbox.

OpenAI also emphasizes that workspace agents continue to operate even when the user is absent. Because workspace agents have a working environment with access to files, code, tools, and memory via Codex in the cloud, they can do more than just respond to prompts; they can write and execute code, use connected applications, remember what they have learned, and continue multi-stage tasks.
Therefore, you can set up tasks to run according to the schedule even when the person in charge is absent, or set up deployments to Slack to process requests immediately, preventing work from becoming dependent on specific individuals.

Furthermore, OpenAI highlights its ability to quickly build workspace agents. By selecting Agents from the ChatGPT sidebar and either describing a recurring workflow within the team or simply uploading a file, ChatGPT will guide you step-by step, from defining procedures and connecting appropriate tools to adding skills and testing, thus enabling you to create agents.

Regarding security measures, users can define the tools and data that agents are allowed to use, the operations they can perform, and the conditions under which approval is required. For sensitive operations such as editing spreadsheets, sending emails, and adding calendar events, it is possible to set agents to request permission before proceeding. In addition, traditional GPTs can continue to be used during the workspace agents verification period, and there are plans to make it easier to convert GPTs to workspace agents in the future.
Workspace agents are available as a research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans. For Enterprise and Edu plans, administrators can enable them through role-based control, and they will be free until May 6, 2026, after which they will transition to credit-based billing.
