Reddit is introducing a system that requires users who behave like AI to provide proof of their identity.

A new initiative is underway on the online forum Reddit to identify AI bots. Going forward, users exhibiting 'suspicious behavior' will be required to prove they are human.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman stated, 'Our product has always been about shaping human conversations. They can be disorganized, sometimes great, sometimes not, but they're always real. As AI plays an increasingly important role on the internet, we want to make it clear on Reddit whether you're talking to a human or not. On Reddit, you should assume that your conversation partner is human unless otherwise specified,' indicating that they will be strengthening their measures against bots.

Measures planned include assigning verified labels to human-operated individual and group accounts and legitimate bot accounts, removing content from malicious bots, and conducting investigations into suspicious activity.

According to CEO Huffman, if the system determines that an account is not run by a human, it may attempt to verify that a human is behind it. This verification may involve passkey authentication, third-party biometric authentication, or verification of government-issued identification documents.

During the verification process, privacy is given top priority, and they only confirm that there is a person in the background; they do not attempt to identify that person.

This verification will primarily be conducted when it is determined that an AI agent has performed an action on behalf of the user or that other automated processes have occurred. CEO Huffman explained that 'this is a rare case and will not apply to most users.'

Furthermore, the act of humans posting AI-generated text is a 'gray area,' and excessive measures will not be taken at this time. CEO Huffman stated, 'We will monitor the use of AI and see what the results will be. For better or for worse, using AI to write will be part of how we communicate in the future. Our focus right now is to ensure that there are real people behind the accounts you see.'
