GitHub has announced that it will use input/output and related contexts for AI training with Copilot; users who do not wish to be trained must opt out by April 24, 2026.

GitHub has announced a policy change for its AI coding assistant, GitHub Copilot. Starting April 24, 2026, information such as input/output and the code around the cursor position will be used to train the AI model. You can opt out in the settings if you do not want your data to be used for AI training.

According to GitHub, the AI model used in GitHub Copilot was trained using 'publicly available data' and 'manually created sample code.' In 2025, they successfully improved the AI model's performance by incorporating interaction data from Microsoft employees, GitHub's parent company. Based on this experience, GitHub decided to also utilize interaction data from general users in its training.

The users to be trained are subscribers to GitHub Copilot's 'Free plan,' 'Pro plan,' and 'Pro+ plan,' and the following interaction data will be used for training.

- Output approved or modified by the user
- Input data sent to GitHub Copilot (including code snippets entered into the model)
- Code context around the cursor position
User-written comments and documents
- File names, repository structure, navigation patterns
- Interacting with various GitHub Copilot features such as chat and inline suggestions.

Data collected for learning purposes may be shared with Microsoft group companies, but not with companies outside the group. Additionally, Business and Enterprise plan users are not included in the learning process, and content stored in private repositories is also excluded.

If you do not want your data to be used for AI training, you need to change your settings by April 24, 2026. To change your settings, sign in to your GitHub account and access the following link.
