Tan was appointed CEO in March 2025, three months after the retirement of former CEO Pat Gelsinger . Originally from Malaysia, Tan earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He then moved to the United States, where he earned a master's degree in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of San Francisco. After graduating from university, he worked as a manager at an energy company and founded the venture capital firm Walden International in 1987. From 2009 to 2021, he served as CEO of Cadence Design Systems, a US company that develops software for semiconductor development.
However, on August 7, 2025, five months after Tan took office, President Trump demanded his resignation, stating on his social media account, 'Intel's CEO has a serious conflict of interest and must resign immediately. There is no other solution.' While President Trump did not disclose the details of the 'serious conflict of interest,' it is reportedly related to issues such as Cadence Design Systems, where Tan previously served as CEO, selling semiconductor design products to the People's Liberation Army National Defense University.

I am in discussions with the Administration to address the issues raised by President Trump and to understand the facts. I fully support the President's commitment to advancing America's national and economic security.' He emphasized his innocence. However, it remains unclear what issues President Trump raised.
