On the evening of August 7, 2025, local time, President Trump posted on Truth Social, 'Intel's CEO has a serious conflict of interest and must resign immediately. There is no other solution.'
There is no mention of Intel in the previous or following posts, so it is unclear what President Trump meant by Tan's 'conflict of interest.' However, news sites such as Bloomberg point out that the posts were made in response to the contents of a questionnaire about Tan sent by Republican Senator Tom Cotton to Intel Chairman Frank Yearly on August 6.
Cotton's letter of inquiry raised questions about Tan's relationship with China and the issue of Cadence Design Systems , where Tan previously served as CEO, selling semiconductor design products to the People's Liberation Army National Defense University.

Cadence Design Systems has agreed to pay more than $140 million in damages in exchange for pleading guilty to the charges.
