Grok 4 is now available to free users and can now read PDF files with hundreds of pages

Grok 4 ' on July 10, 2025. It was touted as the 'world's most powerful AI model,' having been shown to have the highest performance in performance tests by independent organizations. Grok 4 was previously only available to paid Grok users. However, on August 11, 2025, Grok 4 was made available to all users worldwide, including free users.



Grok 4, which debuted on July 10, 2025, boasts a 10x improvement in inference capability compared to its predecessor, the Grok 3 reasoning model, and has been touted as the 'world's most powerful AI model,' outperforming rival models such as DeepSeek-R1, Claude Opus 4, Gemini 2.5 Pro, and OpenAI o3. Artificial Analysis, an independent organization that analyzes AI performance, also published Grok 4 performance test results, reporting that Grok 4 outperformed competing models. Grok 4's 'price per million tokens' also showed that it offered relatively low cost and top-tier performance.

Grok 4 will also have its processing power upgraded on August 9, 2025. According to the announcement, it will be able to smoothly process large PDFs with hundreds of pages or more, and will have more advanced recognition capabilities that will allow for a deeper understanding of PDF content.



Grok 4 was only available to subscribers to SuperGrok, Grok's subscription service, and free users could only use Grok 3. However, xAI announced that Grok 4 would be made available for free to all users worldwide on August 11, 2025. GPT-5 , announced by OpenAI in August 2025, was open to all users, including those with free plans, so the free release of Grok 4 is seen as a response to that.

To use Grok 4, go to Grok . If you're not signed in, you can only use the 'Fast' mode that uses Grok 3, so click 'Sign in' in the upper right corner.

The Grok mode selection now includes an 'Advanced' mode that uses Grok 4. The 'Auto' mode, which automatically selects the best mode, also uses Grok 4 depending on the complexity of the query.



Also, if you use Grok on X, you can use Grok 4 by selecting 'Expert' from the top menu.



xAI announced that it is offering 'generous usage limits' for a limited time, but did not specify how many queries per day can be requested. Also, less restrictive access to Grok 4 and the more powerful Grok 4 Heavy are available only to paid SuperGrok users, and the Grok Imagine image and video generation feature is only available to US users.

Grok 4 was seen as biased, with reports that 'when a user asked for a response to a conflicting opinion, the message 'Compiling Elon Musk's views' was displayed, and a large number of Musk's posts were displayed.' In addition, the video generation feature 'Imagine,' which was only added to Grok in August 2025, has been criticized for making it too easy to create pornographic content that would be regulated under standard models.
