A Chinese AI company has released an open source model 'GLM-4.5' that allows users to use high-performance AI at a lower cost than DeepSeek

Chinese AI startup

Z.ai has announced two new open-source large-scale language models (LLMs) : GLM-4.5 and GLM-4.5-Air . GLM-4.5 performs as well as or better than major AI models, and is even cheaper to use than DeepSeek.

The GLM-4.5 is a model suited to coding and tool use, while the GLM-4.5-Air is a lightweight model ideal for everyday work. The GLM-4.5 has 355 billion total parameters and 32 billion active parameters, while the GLM-4.5-Air has 106 billion total parameters and 12 billion active parameters. Both are hybrid inference models, featuring a thinking mode for complex inference and tool use, and a non-thinking mode for instantaneous response.

According to a blog post by Z.ai, the developer of GLM-4.5, after comparing it with various models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, xAI, Alibaba, Moonshot, DeepSeek, and others in 12 benchmarks, GLM-4.5 ranked third and GLM-4.5 Air ranked sixth in the overall evaluation, both of which achieved high scores.

In particular, in benchmark measurements of agent tasks, both GLM-4.5 and GLM-4.5 Air achieved the highest scores compared to other models.

GLM-4.5 is also a good model for coding, and in the coding ability evaluation, it performed third after OpenAI o3, Claude 4 Sonnet, and Claude 4 Opus.

To showcase the coding capabilities of GLM-4.5, Z.ai released a demo below, which builds an interactive Pokédex webpage with animations, using just a few prompts:

The following shows the features of GLM-4.5, which can generate interactive deliverables such as mini-games and physics simulations in a variety of formats including HTML, SVG, and Python. In addition, Z.ai says it can generate a variety of deliverables, including presentation slides, that are not just text, images, and code.

Another feature of GLM-4.5 is its price. According to Z.ai, GLM-4.5 is even cheaper than DeepSeek, a Chinese AI platform characterized by low-cost development through open source. Z.ai announced that DeepSeek R1 costs 14 cents (approximately 22 yen) for input and $2.19 (approximately 339 yen) for output per million tokens, while GLM-4.5 costs 11 cents (approximately 17 yen) for input and 28 cents (approximately 43 yen) for output, significantly cheaper. The cost of training GLM-4.5 has not been disclosed at the time of writing, but Z.ai CEO Zhou Hou stated, 'We will announce details at a later date.'

GLM-4.5 and GLM-4.5-Air are open-source AI models that are free for developers to download and use. More details are available at Hugging Face.
