The third plant, whose construction began on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, is scheduled to begin manufacturing 2nm and 1.6nm process semiconductors by 2030. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony, said, 'We came to TSMC's Arizona plant to celebrate the revival of American manufacturing. Thanks to President Trump's bold leadership and clear direction, businesses and jobs are returning to America at a record pace.'
In an interview with CNBC , Commerce Secretary Lutnick said, 'Do you know how much the Trump administration has paid (to lure TSMC's investment)? Zero. The tariffs are what got them there. 40,000 construction workers and 20,000 full-time employees will remain in the United States far into the future. That's the heart of the Trump tariff model.'
TSMC CEO Ceci Wei said, 'We are pleased to welcome Secretary Lutnick to the TSMC Arizona facility. This facility represents the largest foreign direct investment in the U.S. market and is an opportunity to highlight the progress of our operations as we mark the 100th day of the Trump Administration. Our third facility will bring even more advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities to the United States. In conjunction with the groundbreaking ceremony for the third factory, Apple CEO Tim Cook commented, 'As TSMC Arizona's first and largest customer, we are excited about the future of American innovation and the great opportunities that lie ahead.' NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang commented, 'We are proud to produce NVIDIA supercomputers, the foundation of the AI revolution, in Arizona and bring AI infrastructure manufacturing back to America.' In addition, AMD CEO Lisa Su also commented, 'As TSMC's Arizona factory's first and largest HPC customer, we are proud to produce 5th generation EPYC processors in the second half of 2025.'
TSMC's advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology is essential to Taiwan's national security, and the Taiwanese government has stated that it will continue to keep its advanced technology in Taiwan even after TSMC expands its production in the United States.
