Generally speaking, boys tend to read less books than girls. However, reading is an important habit for learning language and developing social skills. Here are six tips to encourage boys who don't read much to read more.

One of the most common stereotypes about children's reading is that boys prefer non-fiction and girls prefer fiction. Parents often choose the types of books they read to their children based on this tendency, but Margaret Kristin Merga , a lecturer in education at Curtin University , points out that this assumption should be avoided. Research (PDF) shows that boys, like girls, tend to prefer fiction, so parents choosing books that go against their children's preferences could discourage them from reading.

Research has also shown that fiction contributes more to literacy than non-fiction. Children who read more fiction also show higher levels of social literacy, so we shouldn't simply assume that boys should read non-fiction.

In order to encourage children to read more, it is also important for adults to have strategies to create an environment for them to do so. Therefore, Merga summarizes six steps to encourage children to read as follows:

◆1: Just as adults have a wide range of interests among people of the same age and gender, children also have their own interests. And these interests change over time. In order to match what children want to read with what they really want to read, it is important to talk to your children about reading from time to time, so that you always give them something to read.

◆2: It is important for schools to create an environment where children can easily use the library. Girls tend to visit the library during recess, and as they progress through the grades, their opportunities to use the library decrease due to factors such as the curriculum. Access to the library is effective in increasing the amount of reading, so opportunities should be increased.

◆3: Read to boys and read with them as long as possible. As they get older, boys will also find reading enjoyable.

◆4: Eliminate various distractions around you and create an environment where you can read a book quietly.

◆5: Provide physical books. Compared to girls, boys tend to choose physical books over e-books when reading.

◆6: Children should be taught that reading is fun. It is effective for adults to act as role models and show children how they enjoy reading.
