At its WWDC25 keynote address, Apple announced macOS Tahoe , the latest version of its operating system for Macs. In 2020, Apple announced plans to use its own proprietary processor, 'Apple Silicon,' for Macs, and all new Macs released since November 2020 are equipped with Apple Silicon. However, Macs released before that date still use Intel CPUs. Apple had announced that macOS Tahoe would be the last macOS to support Macs with Intel CPUs.

One year after the announcement of macOS Tahoe, the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS were announced at WWDC26. The codename for macOS 27 is 'Golden Gate'. macOS 27 includes improvements to the visibility of various buttons and labels through adjustments to the transparency of Liquid Glass, as well as enhanced AI capabilities, including the introduction of a standalone Siri app with integrated Apple Intelligence.

Below are screenshots from the official page showing compatible devices for macOS Tahoe on the left and compatible devices for macOS 27 on the right. You can see that, in addition to the ' MacBook Neo ' (released in 2026) and the ' Mac Studio ' (released in 2022 and later), the compatible devices for macOS 27 are all listed as 'with Apple silicon'.

If you're running macOS Tahoe on an Intel Mac, you can expect security and Safari patches to continue for approximately two years after the release of macOS 27.

According to technology media outlet Ars Technica, while third-party utilities previously helped run the latest OS versions on unsupported Intel-based Macs, these workarounds are expected to stop working with macOS 27. Apple is believed to have removed most of the Intel code remaining in macOS, and without that code, it will be virtually impossible to force older Intel-based Macs to continue running newer macOS versions.

macOS 27 will begin beta testing for developers on June 9, 2026 (Japan time), with the official release scheduled for autumn 2026.
