In June 2020, Apple announced plans to adopt its own proprietary processor, ' Apple Silicon ,' for Macs. Since then, Apple has announced its first Apple Silicon, ' M1 ,' and all new Macs announced since November 2020 have been equipped with Apple Silicon.

Previous Macs were equipped with Intel CPUs, but Apple announced that macOS Tahoe will be the last macOS to support Macs with Intel CPUs. In a developer document for Rosetta , which converts PowerPC program code into Intel code, Apple wrote, 'macOS Tahoe will be the last OS released for Intel-based Macs. These systems will continue to receive security updates for the next three years.'

In addition, Apple stated, 'Rosetta is designed to ease the transition to Apple Silicon and will be available as a general-purpose tool for Intel apps in the next two major macOS releases (up to macOS 27) to help developers complete their app transition. After this period, a subset of Rosetta functionality will be maintained to support older, unmaintained game titles that rely on Intel-based frameworks.' Apple announced that Rosetta 2, a conversion layer for transitioning Mac architecture from Intel's x86-64 to Apple Silicon, will be supported until macOS 27, scheduled for release in 2026, after which it will be discontinued.

The latest models of Apple Silicon are the M4 , announced in May 2024, and the M4 Pro and M4 Max, announced in October 2024.
