In June 2020, Apple announced its own proprietary processor, 'Apple Silicon.' The MacBook Air, released in November 2020, featured the first Apple Silicon chip, the M1. TSMC has been exclusively responsible for the manufacturing of these M-series chips.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple and Intel have been in discussions for over a year and have reached an agreement on chip manufacturing in recent months.

In 2025, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst familiar with Apple information, pointed out that 'Intel may start manufacturing low-end M-series chips from 2027,' but the Wall Street Journal reports that it is still unclear which devices Intel's chips will be for.

One reason cited for this move is Apple's reliance on TSMC for chip manufacturing. TSMC handles almost all of the chip manufacturing for Apple products, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, and there have been instances where these chips became difficult to obtain when the MacBook Neo, Mac mini, and Mac Studio were popular.

It has also been pointed out that President Trump met with Apple's then-CEO Tim Cook at the White House and personally lobbied him to choose Intel.
