OpenAI launches self-serve ad platform

OpenAI began testing ad display on ChatGPT in February 2026 and started selling ad space in April 2026.

Advertisers registered on the platform can use the newly released self-service ad manager to create ad campaigns through OpenAI's partner agencies, such as Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP. Technology partners such as Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue, and StackAdapt have also joined, and the company plans to continue investing in and expanding its partner ecosystem.
The Ad Manager allows businesses of all sizes, from small and medium-sized enterprises and startups to global brands, to promote themselves through ChatGPT. Advertisers can register their payment information, set budgets, bids, and pace, and upload ads to launch and manage their campaigns in real time on ChatGPT. The portal also provides measurement tools for analyzing and optimizing ads.
While the pilot version of the ad manager only supported CPM (cost per impression), the beta version adds CPC (cost per click) as well. They plan to continue supporting CPM and CPC, and over time, they will support more methods for bidding and optimization to match the results advertisers value most. Additionally, while the pilot version required a minimum spending of $50,000 (approximately 7.82 million yen) to test ad campaigns, this minimum has been removed in the beta version.
Asad Awang, OpenAI's head of monetization, who made the announcement, stated that 'advertising will not affect the core organic model of ChatGPT,' and explained that they have set high standards regarding user privacy.
