Someone Turned a PS5 Into a Linux Gaming PC, and It Actually Works

Nguyen posted that he had successfully run Linux on a PS5 for the first time in March 2026. In the post, he played the PC game ' Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced ' with ray tracing enabled, which requires a high-performance GPU.

Furthermore, the resolution is maintained at 1440p and 60fps, and optimization is achieved by dynamically allocating VRAM.

Subsequently, Nguyen released 'ps5-linux,' a loader for running Linux on the PS5, on GitHub. ps5-linux exploits a known vulnerability in the PS5's low-level control section, allowing Linux, which normally cannot be booted, to be launched directly. By running Linux on the PS5, it becomes possible to utilize almost the full potential of the PS5's hardware, using the 8-core CPU running at up to 3.5GHz and the GPU running at up to 2.23GHz to run desktop applications and PC games.

ps5-linux only supports older PS5 models called 'PS5 Phat' that have firmware versions 3.xx and 4.xx. According to Nguyen, support for 5.xx firmware may be added in the future, but it may have fewer features and lower performance.
All you'll need is a USB drive with at least 64GB of storage to install and run Linux, a USB Ethernet or wireless LAN adapter for internet connectivity, and a USB keyboard and mouse. After configuring your PS5 as needed, write the Linux image to the USB drive and connect it to your PS5.
Because ps5-linux does not modify the PS5's SSD at all, it is not a permanent Linux installation, and the risk of rendering the PS5 unbootable is considered low. On the other hand, the exploit needs to be run again from the beginning every time the console is restarted.
The ps5-linux repository is publicly available on GitHub. However, while It's FOSS , a news site focused on Linux, praises the fact that a complete Linux port was developed for a console not originally intended for Linux support and that Steam runs on it, it also points out that 'Sony is likely to file a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown request against the repository or take some kind of legal action,' so caution is advised when using it.
