Meta has announced a revamped 'Meta Account,' allowing users to centrally manage app settings and enabling Instagram to use passkeys.

Meta, the company that operates Facebook and Instagram, has announced improvements to its Meta account. The improvements aim to 'make logging in and managing various apps and devices simpler and more centralized,' and also include enhanced security features, such as support for passkeys on Instagram.

The traditional Meta account was a system designed to link VR headsets with Facebook and Instagram, and was linked to a profile in Meta's metaverse app, 'Meta Horizon.'

The new Meta Account is an enhanced, integrated account management system built upon the existing Account Center , aiming to improve the settings management and login experience for various services such as Facebook, Instagram, and AI smart glasses.

The migration from the Account Center to the new Meta account will be rolled out gradually over the next year, with the affected technologies being updated automatically. Meta states that there will be no changes to how you use the app on a daily basis, and the design will enhance the convenience of signing in and managing your settings.

For example, with WhatsApp, if you had previously added it to your Account Center, it will be automatically transferred to your Meta account. However, if you haven't added it, you can continue to manage it individually as before, and the privacy of your messages and calls will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption.

Regarding login and security, you can optionally set a single password to avoid the hassle of remembering multiple passwords, and you can also set up new apps and devices quickly.

Furthermore, security features have been enhanced, and passkeys that allow you to log in using fingerprints, facial recognition, or device passwords are now available for Instagram in addition to Facebook and Messenger.

'Passkey' is an authentication technology that replaces IDs and passwords. It uses biometric authentication or a PIN to verify identity on a device, and then uses a private key stored on the device to authenticate login to services. Since Apple, Google, and Microsoft

agreed to expand its use in 2022, other services have also been adopting passkey.

Facebook has already implemented passkey support since June 2025. Meta states that it will gradually extend passkey support to other services as well as Facebook and Instagram.

Regarding settings management, you can centrally manage common settings that apply across multiple apps, such as passwords, two-factor authentication, and the email address associated with your account, through your Meta account. On the other hand, app-specific settings, such as the visibility of Facebook posts or permission to tag photos on Instagram, will remain independently managed within each app.

Additionally, as a feature for parents, the 'Family Center' within the Meta account allows them to manage their child's Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta Horizon settings all in one place without having to switch accounts.

Meta accounts support Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads, Meta AI, AI glasses, and Meta Quest headsets. Users are not required to consolidate all their accounts into one; they have the flexibility to use separate Meta Accounts for Facebook and Instagram, or to operate WhatsApp without including it in their Meta Account.
