The rental of smart glasses for the purpose of cheating is increasing.

Students Are Now Renting Smart Glasses to Cheat on Exams
Smart glasses can analyze information captured by a camera and display it on a display-type glass. An increasing number of people are using this function to display test answers.
China, where smart glasses are experiencing remarkable growth, is no exception. One Chinese student interviewed by Rest of the World said, 'I can cheat on any subject I'm about to fail using smart glasses,' and shared that he lends his smart glasses to other students who want to do the same.

High-performance smart glasses remain expensive, and for some people, their use is limited. As a result, renting smart glasses that are inexpensive and can be used for short periods is becoming popular.
A Chinese businessman interviewed by Rest of World said he has lent the device to more than 1,000 people in the past four months. According to the businessman, users use it to translate while traveling abroad, to discreetly look at their notes during speeches, and some even use it for testing. The businessman also advertises that it can answer questions in English and math.
While the use of smart glasses is explicitly prohibited in major exams in China, there are cases where proctors fail to recognize them and overlook their use.
Although many courts and major testing centers in the United States have banned smart glasses, enforcement remains extremely difficult. Products like the 'Ray-Ban Meta' sold in the US, which are collaborations with major eyewear brands, look almost identical to ordinary glasses.

By 2025, 2.5 million smart glasses, representing 16.7% of the global total, were shipped to the Chinese market. The Chinese government includes smart glasses in its national subsidy program aimed at stimulating consumption, and it is reported that total smart glasses sales increased by 35% year-on-year during the Spring Festival period in 2026.
