New reports have since emerged, citing three people familiar with the discussions, that Amazon is in talks to invest more than $10 billion in OpenAI, and that as part of the deal, OpenAI plans to use Amazon's AI training chip, Trainium .

Because Microsoft, which owns approximately 27% of OpenAI, has exclusive sales rights, Amazon cannot sell OpenAI models to its own cloud customers. Therefore, Amazon and OpenAI are also discussing the possibility of a commercial partnership in other areas, such as developing ChatGPT for shopping and receiving referral fees from retailers.

It's unclear whether the deal between Amazon and OpenAI will include any arrangements related to ChatGPT's features or the AI-powered shopping features Amazon is developing for its own apps. OpenAI also hopes to sell an enterprise version of ChatGPT to Amazon, the people said.

The source also explained that discussions with Amazon began around October, when OpenAI completed a corporate restructuring to convert its shares into traditional stock. This restructuring allows OpenAI to go public in the future. OpenAI expects to spend more than $100 billion (approximately 15.58 trillion yen) on servers and human resource development over the next four years, and is in need of further funding, potentially leading to an initial public offering, The Information reported.
