Progress Update: Building Healthier Social Media - Bluesky

Bluesky says it's developing a system to map users who are likely to become acquaintances, allowing users to prioritize replies from people who are close to their community, making conversations more relevant, friendly, and less likely to lead to misunderstandings.

Additionally, Bluesky will begin testing a new feedback system called a 'dislike' option to improve personalization in Discover and other feeds. Dislikes will help the system understand what kinds of posts users want to hide. They will also subtly influence the ranking of replies, helping to reduce the visibility of low-quality replies. Dislikes are private, meaning users won't be able to see the posts they dislike.

Additionally, new models have been introduced to accurately detect harmful replies, spam, off-topic replies, and malicious replies. Posts that exceed the thresholds set by Bluesky will be demoted and displayed less frequently in reply threads, search results, and notifications, while maintaining honest discussion.

We're also testing a small change to how the reply button works on top-level posts: instead of jumping directly to the post composition screen, it will first show the full thread, encouraging users to read the entire thread before replying, which is expected to help reduce out-of-context and duplicate replies.

Bluesky's reply settings give posters granular control over who can reply to them. However, many users are unaware of these settings. We've updated the reply settings to make them easier to find and use with a clearer design and a one-time nudge feature on the post composition screen. Increased visibility of reply settings will empower more users to shape their own conversations and prevent unwanted replies.
