According to CNBC, Meta's Chief AI Officer, Alexander Wang, announced the layoffs in an internal message, affecting employees in Meta's Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) division, which oversees the company's AI infrastructure, as well as other related positions.

This decision will not affect the TBD Lab team, which Wang leads. The TBD Lab was formed when Meta Superintelligence Labs, a lab specializing in superintelligence at Meta, was

split into four separate teams. The team oversees Meta's large-scale language models, including Llama, the foundation of the company's AI assistant. The team reportedly includes many top AI talent.

According to sources, Meta's AI department had become bloated, with teams like FAIR often competing with product-oriented groups for computing resources. CNBC reported that the cuts are an attempt to further downsize the AI department and solidify Wang's role as leader of the company's AI strategy.

Meta has been aggressively revising its AI efforts in recent months to keep up with competitors like OpenAI and Google, including announcing a $27 billion deal with Blue Owl Capital to fund and develop the massive data center project 'Hyperion' in the Louisiana suburbs.

In its second-quarter earnings announcement in July 2025, Meta raised the lower end of its previous forecast, projecting total expenses to be in the range of $114 billion to $118 billion (approximately ¥13.36 trillion to ¥18 trillion) in 2025. Meta stated that 'AI-related businesses will drive the cost growth rate in 2026 higher than the previous year,' so total expenses are expected to increase further.

Meta plans to announce its third-quarter financial results at the end of October 2025.
