Meta is committed to maintaining its competitive edge in the AI market and is actively recruiting top AI researchers. In June 2025, it reached an agreement to acquire 49% of Scale AI, a provider of data labeling services required for training machine learning models, for $14.8 billion (approximately 2.2 trillion yen).
In a memo to employees at the end of June, Zuckerberg announced the establishment of Meta Superintelligence Labs, an AI lab dedicated to the pursuit of superintelligence. He also announced that Alexander Wang, CEO of Scale AI, would become Chief AI Officer, leading Meta Superintelligence Labs.

Additionally, on August 19, Meta announced that it would split Meta Superintelligence Labs into four teams and redeploy many of its existing AI-related employees. The new team structure is as follows:
TBD Lab: Led by Wang, this team will oversee Meta's large-scale language models, including the Llama tool that forms the basis of the AI assistant.
FAIR: Meta's AI research lab, which has been in existence for over 10 years, focuses on long-term projects and is led by Robert Fergus , who was also involved in the launch of FAIR.
Products and Applied Research: Integrating developed models and research findings into consumer products. Led by Nat Friedman , former CEO of GitHub.
MSL Infra: Focused on the infrastructure needed to support Meta's AI efforts, led by Aparna Ramani, Vice President at Meta.
'Superintelligence is on the horizon. To take it seriously, we need to organize around key areas essential to making it a reality: research, products, and infrastructure,' Wang wrote in an internal memo seen by Bloomberg.
The New York Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that some executives at Meta Superintelligence Labs are expected to leave the company. The company is also considering downsizing the entire AI division, which has expanded rapidly in recent years, with proposals including cutting jobs and transferring employees to other departments. The discussions are fluid and no final decisions have yet been made.
Meta is also considering shifting from its previous policy of using only its own technology as the foundation for its AI products, and is actively considering leveraging third-party AI models. It was also reported in July that Meta was considering shifting from its open-source AI development policy to developing closed models.
