Apple has officially stated that scratches on the iPhone 17 Pro can be wiped off, so I tried scratching it with all my might.

The

iPhone 17 Pro , released on September 19, 2025, features a durable body called 'hot-forged aluminum unibody' and a highly crack-resistant back glass coating called 'Ceramic Shield.' However, there have been reports online of iPhone 17 Pros on display in stores being heavily scratched. In response to these reports, Apple stated that the scratches were not scratches but transfer of the color of the stand, and could be removed by cleaning. So, we actually tried scratching an iPhone 17 Pro at the GIGAZINE editorial department with a key to see what would happen.

When 9to5Mac contacted Apple about the scratches, the official response was, 'These scratches are caused by worn MagSafe stands used in some stores. These marks are not scratches, but rather the color of the stand transferring to the iPhone, and can be removed with cleaning.'

To verify whether Apple's claims are true, we decided to try scratching the iPhone 17 Pro of the GIGAZINE editorial department with a key. The key is for a standard house door, and for security reasons, we stuck duct tape on it.

Rub the tip of the key against the glass coating on the back. You should be able to tell from the loudness of the rubbing that you're using a lot of force.

After rubbing for just under 20 seconds, a whitish mark was left behind.

Gently wipe with your fingers.

The white marks have completely disappeared, and no scratches remain. As Apple claims, the glass coating on the iPhone 17 Pro is quite strong, and it is highly likely that the scratch-like marks on the display unit in question are simply the color of the stand, as Apple claims.
