A closer look at the appearance of the iPhone 17, an orthodox model compared to the Pro and Air

The iPhone 17 , released on September 19, 2025, has been updated with many features compared to the previous generation iPhone 16, including a high-resolution ultra-wide-angle camera and an always-on display. Since we were able to get our hands on the iPhone 17, we first took a closer look at its appearance and compared it to other models.

The iPhone 17 comes in five colors: black, white, mist blue, sage, and lavender. I bought the sage color this time.

Peel off the sticker on the back of the box.

When the lid was removed, the iPhone 17 appeared.

Inside the box were the iPhone 17 itself, a USB Type-C cable, and a piece of cardboard explaining how to use eSIM without a SIM card.

This is the iPhone 17. It has a 6.3-inch OLED display with a maximum brightness of 1000 nits in standard mode and a peak brightness of 3000 nits outdoors. It's also the first iPhone 17 model to feature an always-on display, and supports ProMotion technology (variable refresh rate) of up to 120Hz. The cover glass is made of Ceramic Shield 2, which is three times more scratch-resistant than the iPhone 16.

It has a Dynamic Island on top and an 18-megapixel front camera.

The actual bezel width was approximately 1.5 mm.

The back has a smooth texture, with only the Apple logo being smooth.

The rear camera consists of a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. The iPhone 16 had a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, but the iPhone 17 has both a 48-megapixel main and ultra-wide-angle camera.

There are no buttons on the top.

There is a USB Type-C port on the bottom.

The terminal part of the USB Type-C port is the same color as the main body.

The left side is equipped with a volume adjustment button and an action button.

The right side houses the side buttons and camera controls.

The dimensions are 71.5mm wide x 149.6mm high x 7.95mm thick, and the thickest part of the camera is about 11mm.

It looks like this when you hold it in your hand to get a sense of the size.

The actual weight is 176g.

The iPhone 17 (left) and iPhone 16 (right) are side-by-side. While they look very similar, the iPhone 17 measures 71.5mm wide x 149.6mm high x 7.95mm thick, while the iPhone 16 measures 71.6mm wide x 147.6mm high x 7.80mm thick. The iPhone 17 is 0.1mm thinner and 2mm longer.

The iPhone 17 is 0.15mm thicker, but it feels almost the same in your hand.

The iPhone 17 (left),

iPhone 17 Pro (center), and iPhone Air (right) look like this. They look so different that it's hard to believe they were all released on the same day.

The iPhone 17 is 7.95mm thick, while the iPhone 17 Pro is 8.75mm thick.

Compared to the iPhone Air, which is only 5.64mm thick, it looks like this.

The 256GB model of the iPhone 17 costs 129,800 yen (tax included), and the 512GB model costs 164,800 yen (tax included). It is also available on Amazon.co.jp, but was out of stock at the time of writing.
