Microsoft was one of the first companies to introduce remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. While using its own software to create a remote work environment for all employees, about a year after the implementation, the company lifted its office lockdown and introduced a ' hybrid/flexible work ' system that allowed employees to work in the way they wanted, creating a hybrid system that combined remote work and in-office work. This system allowed most employees to work from home for less than half of their working hours.

However, this system has been slightly changed, and employees are now required to come to the office at least three days a week, and those who live within 50 miles (about 80 km) of the office are now required to come to the office.
Amy Coleman, Microsoft's Chief People Officer, sent a message to all employees effective September 9, 2025, announcing the changes, saying, 'We've examined how teams work best and the data is clear: the more in-person we work together, the more energized our team members are, the more they reach their full potential, and the better their outcomes. As we develop the AI products that will define this era, the energy and momentum that comes from bringing talented people together to tackle difficult challenges is essential.'

The changes to the workforce will be rolled out in three phases, starting in late February 2026 in the Puget Sound region of Washington State, where Microsoft is based, and then expanding to the entire United States, followed by an increase in the number of in-office days worldwide.

'This may be a significant change for some of you, which is why we are providing you with ample time to plan,' Coleman added. 'As part of these updates, we are also enhancing our workplace safety and security measures to continue providing a work environment where all employees can perform at their best.'
