Google forces some remote workers to come into the office three days a week, refusing to do so will cost them their jobs

According to an internal document from Google, remote work arrangements are being semi-forced to be lifted in some departments of the company. About five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, the corporate structure is changing.
Google teams are including remote workers in their cuts
According to an internal Google document obtained by news media CNBC, Google is informing employees who work remotely that their jobs may be in jeopardy unless they report to the nearest office and begin a hybrid work-from-home/work-in shift. Some of these employees had been approved to work remotely for some time, but the situation appears to be gradually changing.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2019, many companies, including major corporations, have shifted to remote work in order to prevent the spread of infection. Google was one of the companies that took the lead in shifting to a remote work system, but in 2023 it reviewed its remote work system and began asking employees to come to the office as a general rule.

In March 2025, Google co-founder Sergey Brin was quoted as saying that employees working in the field of AI should be in the office every day of the week, with 60 hours a week being the sweet spot for productivity. Brin said the company must step up to keep up with the AI race, which is accelerating rapidly, and indicated that going to the office is essential to achieving that goal.

In a recent announcement, Google's technical services employees are being asked to switch to a hybrid workforce or opt to resign, with remote workers in the division reportedly being offered a one-time relocation allowance to move from the company's office to a nearby location.
In addition, remote workers in the human resources department, known as People Operations, have been informed that 'those who live within 50 miles (about 80 km) of the office must transition to hybrid work by June 2025, and those who live in remote areas can continue to work remotely, but will not be promoted unless they transition to hybrid work.'
Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini told CNBC, 'Decisions about asking remote workers to return are up to individual teams and are not a company-wide policy. As we've said before, in-person collaboration is a key component of how we innovate and solve complex problems. To support this, some teams are asking remote workers who live near our offices to return to in-person work three days a week.'
