How beautiful is the 'AI 100x zoom'? I actually took a photo with the Pixel 10 Pro camera. Review, including examples of mysterious corrections using AI.

The cameras on Google's smartphones, the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, are equipped with a feature called ' Super Resolution Zoom Pro ,' which allows you to zoom up to 100x.

The official page states that 'the upgraded telephoto lens and newly developed AI image technology enable you to take crisp, vivid close-up photos like never before,' so I actually took a photo and tried to see how beautiful the photos I could take.

Super Resolution Zoom Pro is automatically enabled when shooting at a magnification of 30x or higher. The maximum shooting magnification is 100x. As a test, let's take a photo of the white bird in the area surrounded by the red frame below at 100x zoom.

Just set the zoom to 100x and tap the shutter button.

When I opened the Photos app to check the photo after taking it, a notification saying 'Processing with Super Resolution Zoom Pro' appeared at the top of the screen, and after a few seconds the processed image was displayed. Both the unprocessed and processed images remained in the Photos app.

So this is the image before processing.

And here is the image after applying Super Resolution Zoom Pro processing. Noise has been reduced and even the texture of the feathers has been rendered. Note that the examples in this article have been resized for the article, and you can click on each image to see the original size before resizing.

I also tried shooting various other subjects to see the effect of Super Resolution Zoom Pro, such as a road closure sign.

This is what it looks like after processing with Super Resolution Zoom Pro. Noise has been reduced, and the sign and the grass in the background are clearer. However, the part that says 'Excluding bicycles' is rendered as a mysterious shape that cannot be recognized as text. Since Super Resolution Zoom Pro is only using AI to guess what is in the image, it may not be an accurate depiction.

Photographing the bridge.

After processing with Super Resolution Zoom Pro. The bridge structure has been cleared up, but the human faces look a bit squashed.

Spiral staircase.

After Super Resolution Zoom Pro processing. As expected, artifacts can be beautifully corrected.

The top of the radio tower.

After processing with Super Resolution Zoom Pro, even the fine mesh of the bird netting was reproduced beautifully.

The tip of the tower.

After Super Resolution Zoom Pro processing. The number '2' has been distorted.

I'll also try photos with text.

After Super Resolution Zoom Pro processing, the large katakana company name is clearly reproduced. However, upon closer inspection, the characters are distorted.

I'll try it with kanji too.

After processing with Super Resolution Zoom Pro, we can just about read 'Kubo Logistics Industry' on the top line, but 'Low Temperature Warehouse' on the bottom line is a bit hard to read.

Photographing the bento menu.

After processing with Super Resolution Zoom Pro, 'burdock' has become 'kopou.' 'Potato salad' has become 'potato salad.'

Photographing an alarm clock.

The numbers and hands are in pretty good condition, but it's hard to tell whether the 'CASIO' part in the top center or the 'BELL ALARM' part in the bottom center are even letters.

Photograph of a trash can in front of a Family Mart store.

It looks pretty neat, but it still seems to have trouble with letters.

Note that Super Resolution Zoom Pro works by downloading the AI model for Super Resolution Zoom Pro when the camera app is first launched. Therefore, it is possible that future updates to the AI model for Super Resolution Zoom Pro will improve correction performance at 100x zoom.

We plan to publish a review article on the basic camera performance of the Pixel 10 series soon.
