Google Translate adds AI-based real-time translation and language learning features

On August 26, 2025 local time, Google announced that it has added two new AI features to Google Translate: one that translates voice in real time to support live conversations, and another that allows users to practice speaking in languages they are currently learning.

Matt Sheets, product manager for Google Translate, said in a blog post, 'Approximately 1 trillion words are translated every month through Google Translate, Search, and visual translation through Google Lens and Kakotte Search . Advances in AI have made it even easier to overcome language barriers. Leveraging the advanced inference capabilities and multimodal capabilities of the Gemini model, we're introducing two new features to Google Translate that will support real-time conversation and language learning.'

◆ Real-time translation of live conversations
The Google Translate app for Android and iOS now has a new feature that allows you to have real-time conversations using voice and screen translation. To use it, open the app, tap 'Live translate,' select the language you want to translate to, and then speak in the language you speak.

You can see what Google Translate's real-time translation function is like by watching the video below.

I launched the live translation feature in the Google Translate app and spoke in English. The English I spoke was displayed at the top of the app screen, and the Spanish translation was displayed in near real time below.

Although background noise can be heard, the live translation feature uses advanced speech recognition models trained to isolate only the spoken voice, making it usable in situations like crowded airports and noisy cafes.

The Google Translate app then detected when the user stopped speaking and played the translated Spanish aloud, creating a live conversation that felt like you were having an interpreter.

Also, if your conversation partner speaks to you in Spanish, it will translate from Spanish to English in real time.

The new live translation feature will be available to users in the United States, India, and Mexico from August 26th.

◆Customized language learning function
One of the challenges in learning a new language is being able to accurately hear what is being said in the language you're learning and then confidently speak it in your own words. That's why Google Translate is testing a new feature that allows you to practice listening and speaking.

Simply tap 'practice' in the Google Translate app, set your skill level and goals, and the app will generate customized scenarios for you. In each scenario, you can listen to the conversation, tap words you hear, and practice speaking with hints.

These exercises were developed in collaboration with learning experts, Sheets said, 'and they help you track your daily learning progress and develop the skills you need to communicate confidently in a foreign language.'

The language learning feature in the Google Translate app has received positive feedback from early testers, and will be available in beta this week for Android and iOS. The first language learning features will be available for English speakers learning Spanish and French, and Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers learning English.
