Threads reaches 400 million monthly active users

Meta's text-based social networking service, Threads, has announced that it has surpassed 400 million monthly active users. The number of mobile active users is also growing at a rapid pace, approaching X.

Adam Mosseri , head of Instagram and supporter of Threads, announced on his Threads account on August 13, 2025, that as of late July 2025, Threads had more than 400 million monthly active users. Mosseri said, 'Threads started as a quirky idea to compete with Twitter (now X), but has now evolved into a meaningful platform where various perspectives can be freely exchanged. I'm truly grateful to everyone who has helped make it what it is today. We still have a lot of work to do.'

Threads launched in July 2023 as a short-message social networking site similar to X. It registered 2 million users within two hours of its launch, and then grew at an astonishing pace, gaining 30 million new users in less than 24 hours. Threads' monthly active users exceeded 175 million within a year of its release, and in May 2025, during Meta's Q1 2025 financial results announcement, CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Threads' monthly active users had reached 350 million.

According to data from the competitive analysis tool Similarweb, Threads had 115.1 million mobile active users in June 2025, a 128% increase from the previous year, continuing its rapid growth. X's mobile active users in the same month were 132 million, a decrease of more than 15% from the previous year, and although it is still more popular than Threads, the gap is narrowing.

Looking only at data from within the US, Threads' daily mobile users are estimated at 15.3 million, compared to 22.9 million for X, with the gap narrowing even further. Meanwhile, in terms of web browser visits, X recorded 145.8 million visits per day in June, while Threads only had 6.9 million.

In June 2025, Threads tested a ' spoiler prevention feature ' that blurs parts of posted text and images, and in July it added DM and highlight features , as well as enhanced its performance analysis feature ' Threads Insights .' Threads has released a number of new features that are useful as a short-message posting social network, and its growth is thought to reflect these features.
