Domke, a native of Germany, studied computer engineering at the Technical University of Berlin and earned a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Glasgow. He co-founded the startup Hockey App in 2008. Hockey App was acquired by Microsoft in 2014, and Domke moved from Germany to the United States at that time. He served as GitHub's product manager, vice president of strategic programs, and chief product officer (CPO) before becoming GitHub's CEO in 2021.

Domke wrote in a blog post that since selling HockeyApp to Microsoft, he's had the opportunity to work with many great people. 'I've come to see my roots in startups again, and I've decided to leave GitHub to become a founder once again,' he said, revealing his decision to step down as CEO to found a new startup.

Domke also emphasized that 'GitHub is booming right now and has a bright future,' citing specific achievements such as more than 150 million developers using the platform, over 1 billion repositories and forks, the doubling of AI projects over the past year, and GitHub Copilot becoming the market leader with over 20 million users.

Meanwhile, Domke's departure will result in significant organizational changes at GitHub. Microsoft will not appoint a CEO to replace Domke. Instead, GitHub's leadership team will transition to being part of Microsoft's Core AI team, reporting more directly to it. This change means that GitHub, which has operated as an independent organization since being acquired by Microsoft for $7.5 billion in 2018, will be more closely integrated into Microsoft itself, particularly the team at the core of its AI strategy.

'I believe we're heading towards a future where AI agents empower a billion developers, and that journey will be recognized as starting with GitHub,' Domke said. He concluded by thanking GitHub employees (Hubbers), saying it was a great honor to be their colleagues and leaders.

Domke plans to stay at GitHub until the end of 2025 to help with the transition.
