A review of Yamazen's compressor-type small dehumidifier 'YDC-J03'

Yamazen's compressor dehumidifier ' YDC-J03 ' can reduce the humidity in a room and help dry clothes when hanging them out to dry. Despite its compact size, it's a powerful dehumidifier capable of dehumidifying up to 3.8 liters of air per day, so we tried it out.

The YDC-J03 was in a cardboard box, which contained the YDC-J03 itself, as well as an instruction manual and a drainage hose.

This is the YDC-J03. The device measures 25.3cm wide x 34cm high x 18.5cm deep, which is about the same size as the iPhone 15 Pro. The round part at the top of the front is the monitor lamp, which lights up when the device is in operation.

The tank can be removed by pulling it forward.

The tank lid is easily removable and holds approximately 1.7 liters.

There is a space for your fingers at the bottom of the intake.

This is where you can remove the filter, which needs to be cleaned regularly.

The black part below the intake is removable and serves as the drain. By attaching the included drain hose, continuous drainage is possible, but the drain hose needs to be routed downward from the unit, so continuous drainage using the drain hose may be difficult to achieve in certain environments.

The top of the main unit looks like this.

There are various buttons and a display above the 'YAMAZEN' logo. There is a description of the function written above the buttons, so you won't have to worry about forgetting which button performs which operation. From left to right, the buttons are the sleep button, air volume button, off timer button, humidity setting button, and power button. The humidity level is displayed in the space between the off timer button and the humidity setting button.

A handle on the top back for carrying.

There is an air outlet (louver) at the front, which can be opened and closed up to 90 degrees.

The bottom looks like this and has rubber parts on the feet to make it less slippery.

Let's try it out. First, insert the power plug into the outlet.

When installing the YDC-J03, pay attention to the following six points.
- Install the unit at least 20cm away from objects on both sides and in front and behind, and at least 50cm above.
- Install on a stable, sturdy and level surface
Do not install in direct sunlight or near a heat source such as a heater.
- Do not install the unit in a location where the air intake or exhaust vents are easily blocked by curtains or other objects.
・Do not use in an enclosed area (as this may cause a fire).
- Install at least 1 metre away from televisions and radios

Move the air outlet to determine the airflow direction.

All you have to do is press the power button.

The monitor lamp lights up and operation starts.

The monitor lamp will light up green if the indoor humidity is lower than the set humidity, yellow if it is 1 to 9% higher than the set humidity, and red if it is 10% or more higher than the set humidity.

The display on the top panel shows the indoor humidity, ranging from 35% to 81%. If the humidity level is below 34%, it will show 'Lo', and if it is above 82%, it will show 'Hi'.

To set the humidity, press the humidity setting button to the right of the display.

This allows you to adjust the humidity setting.

The humidity can be set between 40% and 70%, and each time you press the button it increases by 5%, so if you press the button when it is at 70%, it will return to 40%.

We tested the YDC-J03 to see how much humidity it could reduce in a room in a 5-tatami mat wooden house with a humidity level of 70% while the air conditioner was set to cool at 26 degrees. The YDC-J03 was set to 'strong' fan speed and humidity level at 40%. Two wet towels were placed inside the room to increase the humidity.

Indoor humidity was measured using

The graph below shows the humidity change measured with a thermo-hygrometer. The humidity was around 66% at the start of the measurement, and the humidity gradually decreased over the first 13 hours. In fact, a wet towel placed in the room was completely dry within 5 hours of operation.

The humidity dropped to around 55%, but after 7:00 a.m., the humidity rose sharply as shown in the red frame.

I went to check out the YDC-J03 to see what was going on, and found that the full water indicator light above the power button was on.

When I checked the tank, it was almost full. It took about 14 hours for the tank to fill up.

I dumped the water out of the tank and ran the YDC-J03 again, and although the humidity in the room dropped to a comfortable level (around 55%), it couldn't get it down to the 40% range. Even after running it for over a full day, it still couldn't get the humidity down to the set 40%; it just hovered around 55%. It's clear that it's dehumidifying, as the tank fills up in half a day, but the humidity remains much higher than the set level, and I'm a little concerned that the monitor light remains lit red.

One thing that bothered me while using the device was that although it has a sleep mode, the intensity of the monitor light does not change even when sleep mode is enabled. However, when sleep mode is enabled, the light from the display and the lights above the various buttons becomes weaker. If you find the bright light bothersome while sleeping, you may need to cover the monitor light with tape or something similar.
