A review of Yamazen's steam humidifier 'KS-GC281' that is safe with a rapid mode that starts humidifying in about 15 minutes after turning on the power and an automatic operation stop function that prevents empty burning

In the cold season, many people have experienced waking up with a sore throat due to the air in the room becoming dry from heating too much. Not only does excessive dryness cause sore throats, but it can also cause problems such as drying out mucous membranes and weakening the body's defenses, making you more susceptible to catching colds, so it is important to use a humidifier to maintain the appropriate humidity. I was given a Yamazen steam humidifier ' KS-GC281 ', which is perfect for winter,

as a gift , so I checked out how to use it and its functions.

Testing the humidification performance

◆The exterior looks like this
This is the outer box of 'KS-GC281'.

Inside was the humidifier itself, an instruction manual, warnings, and a power cord.

The height of the main unit with the handle lowered is about 31 cm, and the length and width are about 23 cm. The weight of the main unit is about 1.8 kg without water and without the power cord.

The height of the handle is about 45 cm, and when an editorial staff member who is 177 cm tall holds it in his hand, it looks like this. The impression of the appearance is that of a large electric kettle.

The top lid has a steam vent and a handle.

The lid can be removed by pressing the unlock button that pops out from the handle and lifting it up. The lid is not connected to the main body, so it can be removed completely.

The internal tank looks like this: The silver part at the bottom is the evaporation dish that heats the water.

There is a water level line on the side.

There were also instructions on the direction to drain the water, so that the control panel of the humidifier itself and the power cord plug would not get wet.

The operation panel on the front is very simple, with a small monitor at the top surrounded by various lights, as well as a power button, a button to adjust the humidification level, a button to adjust the timer, and a button to switch to quick mode.

There is a power cord plug at the bottom of the back.

The power cord is connected with a magnet and is about 1.5m long.

◆I actually tried it
To use the 'KS-GC281' right away, fill the main unit with water up to the water level line.

Place the unit on a stable surface and plug in the power cord.

When the power button is pressed, a beep sounds and the humidity lamp on the top left of the monitor and the humidification amount 'Lo (low)' lamp on the bottom left of the monitor light up. When the humidity lamp on the top left is on, the monitor displays the current humidity in the room, but the numbers are only displayed within the range of 31% to 79%, and when the humidity is 30% or less, it is displayed as 'Lo', and when it is 80% or more, it is displayed as 'Hi'.

The amount of humidification can be adjusted in four stages: 'Lo (low)', 'Mi (medium)', 'Hi (high)', and 'Auto (automatic)'. By default, the amount of humidification is set to 'Lo'. You can change the amount of humidification by pressing the humidification amount button under the power button. The humidification amount 'Lo' is about 200 ml per hour, 'Mi' is about 350 ml per hour, 'Hi' is about 500 ml of steam per hour, and 'Auto' switches between 'Lo' and 'Hi' depending on the situation so that the humidity is 50-60%.

If you hang a blackout curtain behind it, you can see steam coming out from the top of the 'KS-GC281'.

When measuring the temperature of the air outlet with the thermal camera '

FLIR i3 ,' it sometimes reached nearly 100 degrees when humidifying at 'Hi.' If you hold your hand over the air outlet, there is a risk of being burned by the steam, so be careful not to bring your hand close to it carelessly.

In addition, when you press the rapid mode switch button, the second rapid mode lamp from the right on the top row lights up and the rapid mode is set, which speeds up humidification. In normal operation (water level MAX, room temperature 20 degrees, water temperature 20 degrees), steam starts to spray out in about 40 minutes, but in rapid mode, steam starts to spray out in about 15 minutes, so rapid mode is recommended when you want to increase humidity as quickly as possible. When humidification begins, rapid mode ends and the unit switches to normal operation at the set humidification amount.

When you press the timer button during humidification operation, the monitor will switch to displaying the timer time, and the second timer lamp from the right at the top will light up. Each time you press the timer button, the timer time will change in sequence from '1H' → '2H' → '3H' → '4H' → 'Timer Cancel', so you can set the desired time while watching the monitor. Note that while setting the timer, the monitor will prioritize displaying the timer time, but if you press the humidification amount button or the rapid mode button, it will switch to displaying the humidity for only 5 seconds.

Below is a video of the boiling water sound that comes with steam humidifiers, with the humidification amount set to 'Hi.' If you're far away from the device, it's not that noticeable, but you can still hear the bubbling sound of the water boiling, so if you're sensitive to even the faint sound, you should be careful.

If the tank runs out of water during humidification operation, a continuous beep will sound, the water supply lamp on the top right will light up, and the humidification operation will automatically stop. To resume operation, you will need to turn off the power, wait until the tank has cooled sufficiently, then fill it with water and turn the power back on.

When calculated based on a standard electricity rate of 31 yen/kWh, the electricity bill comes to about 12.4 yen per hour in 'Hi' mode operation and about 9.3 yen per 15 minutes in rapid mode operation.

Testing the humidification performance
This time, we actually ran the 'KS-GC281' indoors to test how long it would take to restore humidity in a dry room. The 'KS-GC281' is suitable for rooms with a maximum floor area of 8.5 tatami mats for wooden rooms and 14 tatami mats for prefabricated Western-style rooms. The test room we used this time was a Western-style room of about 12 tatami mats, with the heating on and the windows and doors closed.

First, place the 'KS-GC281' with the tank filled with water inside the room.

The humidifier itself has a hygrometer, but I was curious to see if the air further away from the unit would be moisturized, so this time I measured it with a hygrometer placed about 5m away from the unit. At the start of the test, the room temperature was 22.1°C and the humidity was 23%. The room was extremely dry in winter, and the heating was on, so the air was extremely dry.

I started the operation. I wanted to humidify quickly, so I turned on the rapid mode and set the humidification amount to 'Hi.' It was about 15 minutes after the operation started that steam started to come out.

The humidity was 27% 30 minutes after the steam started to erupt. The humidity is gradually increasing.

When I looked at the outlet at the top of the unit, I saw droplets of cooled steam.

The humidity was 33% one hour after operation.

After two hours, the humidity had risen to 38%. At this level, you can feel that the air in the room is more moist than before the humidifier was turned on.

Three hours later, the humidity was 46%, which is

within the comfortable range of 40-60% for humans.

The monitor on the humidifier itself displayed 58%, and there was a significant difference in the measured humidity between the area around the humidifier and places far away.
