Google announces that it will not stop actively used URLs even if it ends the shortened URL 'goo.gl'

Google has announced that it will continue to allow the shortened URL 'goo.gl' to continue functioning if it can confirm that it is actively being used, despite the service being discontinued in August 2025.

We're updating our plans for goo.gl links.

'goo.gl' is a shortened URL generated by 'Google URL Shorter,' a URL shortening service that Google has provided since 2009.

Even after Google URL Shorter shut down in 2019, the shortened URLs generated by it remained usable. However, in July 2024, Google announced that 'after August 25, 2025, goo.gl will no longer respond to requests.'

In preparation for the end of service, Google will display a message to shortened URLs that are not in use as of the end of 2024 saying, 'This link will stop working soon.'

According to Google, shortened URLs with this message will no longer work when the service is discontinued on August 25, 2025, and the company is urging users to switch to other services.

On the other hand, shortened URLs that do not display a message are considered to have a history of use and will continue to function as before after August 25, 2025. To check whether a particular shortened URL will still be usable after the expiration date, simply access the shortened URL. If you are redirected without seeing a message, it means the shortened URL will continue to work.
