Google has offered the URL shortening service ' Google URL Shortener ' since 2009, but the service was discontinued at the end of March 2019. The domain of URLs shortened by Google URL Shortener is 'goo.gl'. It was announced in July 2024 that 'goo.gl' will no longer respond after August 25, 2025.

Starting on August 23, 2024, when you open a 'goo.gl' link, a certain percentage of users will see an interstitial page like the one below before the intended page opens. The percentage of users who see this interstitial page is increasing as the service comes to an end.
If you have a use case that cannot be utilized due to the display of interstitial pages, you can suppress the display of interstitial pages by adding the query parameter 'si=1' to your existing 'goo.gl' links.

With just one month left until goo.gl shuts down, if you haven't already migrated your URLs to another shortening service, you'll need to act now.
In addition, in an article in The Verge reporting on the impending closure of 'goo.gl', some people were critical of Google, saying, 'I don't think it costs much for Google to operate a URL shortening service, but eliminating it would cause an immeasurable amount of links to stop working. The Internet should be run as a public utility, not a private service that has no interest in running anything long-term.' However, there were also opinions that Google's response was sincere, saying, 'It seems reasonable, considering that the service was shut down in 2019 and users have been warned about its closure for over five years.'
