President Trump reportedly preparing executive order to extend TikTok ban, marking third extension

In the United States, a TikTok ban has been passed, forcing TikTok to choose between 'selling its business' or 'suspending its service in the United States.' However, President Donald Trump has issued two executive orders to suspend the TikTok ban for 75 days, and TikTok's service is still in operation at the time of writing. It has now been reported that President Trump is preparing a third extension order.

In the United States, the ' Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA) ' was enacted in April 2024. This law was discussed with the aim of targeting TikTok, which is operated by a Chinese company, and is also known as the 'TikTok Ban Act.'
The TikTok Prohibition Act stipulates that 'if TikTok does not sell its business by January 19, 2025, TikTok's service provision and app distribution will be prohibited,' and in fact, the App Store and Google Play stopped distributing the TikTok app on January 19, 2025. In addition, even if the TikTok app had already been installed, the TikTok service itself was temporarily suspended and could not be used, but the service was resumed in a short time due to the efforts of President Trump, who was not yet inaugurated as president at the time.

As the deadline for the suspension approaches, The Washington Post reported that it had received information from a person familiar with the president's plans that President Trump plans to sign a third executive order to postpone the TikTok ban. The TikTok ban was ruled constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, and some Republican lawmakers have expressed dissatisfaction with President Trump's repeated suspension orders. In addition, former Department of Justice official Gregg Nunziata pointed out that 'the president's refusal to enforce the TikTok ban is exceeding his legal authority.'
