President Trump says he will lower tariffs on Chinese products if China agrees to sell TikTok

As the deadline for the temporary measure to postpone the ban on TikTok in the United States approaches on April 5, 2025, President Trump said, 'The United States is prepared to lower tariffs on Chinese products if the Chinese government allows TikTok to sell its business.'

TikTok's distribution in the United States will be suspended in January 2025 due to the so-called 'TikTok Ban Act,' a law that prohibits the distribution of the app unless TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells its American business to a domestic company.

Subsequently, President Trump, who was inaugurated for a second term, signed a presidential motion to halt enforcement of the law for 75 days, allowing TikTok to continue its service until April 5th.

ByteDance has until April 5 to sell TikTok to a company outside of China or risk leaving the US, a sale that is believed to require approval from the Chinese government.

On March 26, 2025, President Trump told reporters gathered in the Oval Office, 'With regards to TikTok, China will probably have to play a role in terms of approval, and I think they will. I'll probably give them a little bit of a tariff reduction or something to make that happen,' suggesting that the United States would reduce tariffs on Chinese products if the Chinese government approved the sale of TikTok.

President Trump wants the U.S. government to own 50% of TikTok's shares, and at least four investment groups have made offers to buy the company, with Vice President J.D. Vance apparently leading the talks.

It will be difficult to get the Chinese government to abandon TikTok, which is estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars due to its popularity, but President Trump has been trying to get the Chinese government to approve the sale of TikTok by using tariffs as a bargaining chip. On January 20, the first day of his inauguration, President Trump warned that he could impose additional tariffs on China if the Chinese government does not approve the transaction between the United States and TikTok.

'There will be some kind of deal, but if it's not done, it's not a big deal. We'll just extend it,' President Trump told reporters, indicating he would extend the deadline further if the private negotiations fail to reach an agreement.

Reuters requested comment from TikTok, but the company did not immediately respond.
