Mario Kart's '200cc' is actually about as fast as '415cc'

You're right: Mario Kart 8's 200cc speed is way, way off | Polygon

Reddit user sammy_zammy posted the results of his test of how fast the 200cc is in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in May 2025. The test was conducted by playing a two-player game without a CPU on the classic course of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, 3DS Toad Circuit, with Googoo as the character. When the race started, the car retreated to the start of the straight course, then used a mushroom, an item that accelerates speed, to reach maximum speed, and measured the time from passing the starting line to touching the end of the straight course.

Using the same measurement method, we checked the speeds of 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, and 200cc karts, and got the graph below. If we take 150cc as the standard '1', the speed changes by 0.1 points, with 50cc at '0.8' and 100cc at '0.9', and there is an almost linear relationship between the displacement (cc) and the speed of the kart. However, according to sammy_zammy, the linear relationship did not follow from 150cc to 200cc, and the kart was significantly faster by about 1.5 times.

If we apply the rule that 'speed increases by 0.1 points for every 50cc' seen between 50cc and 150cc, sammy_zammy says that the speed of 200cc is equivalent to '415cc'.

Supper Mario Broth, a fan site that provides information on the Mario series, quoted sammy_zammy's Reddit and said, 'If you've ever felt that the 200cc in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is faster than it should be, your suspicions are correct,' and added, 'The statement that '200cc is actually 415cc' is based on a linear relationship measured from the settings of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, not on real-world logic. In the real world, the relationship between engine displacement and speed is not linear.' Some people commented on Supper Mario Broth's post, 'I think this speed was chosen with game balance in mind, but why was it this speed? Maybe the maximum speed that doesn't spoil the fun was 200cc,' while others said, 'If it was about 400cc fast, I would have preferred it if it was written as 400cc.'
If you have ever felt that 200cc in Mario Kart 8/Deluxe is much faster than it should be, your suspicions are correct. Based on the formula followed by the other engine classes, the speed the game pretends is 200cc is actually 415cc instead. pic.twitter.com/mHnEVoQy9M

Polygon, a game media company, stated that 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been gaslighting players for 10 years' after sammy_zammy's verification. After the '200cc' was added to the Wii U software ' Mario Kart 8 ' released in 2014 in 2015, some players criticized that '200cc is too fast (compared to 150cc)', but since the notation of 200cc seems to have gradually increased in speed from 150cc, players who complain about the speed of 200cc tend to be refuted as 'the opinion that it is too fast is a misunderstanding derived from a lack of playing skills', Polygon pointed out. In fact, after sammy_zammy's verification, many people were convinced that '200cc was too fast after all!'
Mario Kart World , which will be released on June 5, 2025, the same day as the Nintendo Switch 2, is said to have new courses, modes, items, and new gameplay that allows you to run freely around a wide world. However, at the time of writing, it is not clear whether there is a 200cc engine or how fast it will be.
