Apple was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging that it had used unauthorized recordings of users' voices by Siri, had third-party contractors play the recordings and then used the data to target ads.
The lawsuit was settled in January 2025 by Apple paying a total of $95 million (approximately 14 billion yen).

Those who may be eligible to receive the settlement funds are those who owned or purchased a Siri-enabled device in the US, including an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, iPod touch, or Apple TV, between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024, and in which Siri was activated during a private conversation.
An email with the subject 'Lopez Voice Assistant Class Action Settlement' will inform you of the settlement and you may have received a notice in the mail.
The email will contain a claim identification code and a verification code that you will need when claiming your settlement.
Those who receive the notice are given several options. First, if they remain in the settlement group, they will accept the settlement agreement with Apple and will be paid by filling out a claim form by July 2, 2025. The payment amount will be up to $20 (approximately 3,000 yen) per eligible Siri-enabled device, up to a maximum of five devices. The amount is subject to change depending on the allocation.
Alternatively, you can choose to opt out of the settlement group, which means you can continue to pursue other claims against Apple, but you won't be able to get any payments under the settlement.
You can also submit comments or objections to the proposed settlement, and attend hearings, but you cannot ask the court to make a settlement offer higher than the default settlement offer.
You can also choose to 'do nothing,' which will mean giving up your legal rights to the settlement and not receiving any payment, but still being bound by the settlement.
