The lawsuit, filed in 2019 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses Apple of failing to provide enough internal space in the original Apple Watch and Apple Watch Series 1-3 to accommodate expanding batteries.

The issue, the plaintiffs allege, caused the Apple Watch's lithium-ion battery to expand, putting pressure on the display and other components, which led to structural damage to the device, specifically, in some cases causing the screen to detach entirely.

Apple continues to deny the plaintiffs' allegations, but agreed to the settlement in order to end the lawsuit, which has now been in existence for about five years, and avoid further prolongation.

In a statement, Apple denied the existence of any defects, saying, 'Apple Watch is designed to be secure and reliable,' and added, 'This settlement applies to the original Apple Watch, Apple Watch Series 1, Apple Watch Series 2 and Apple Watch Series 3, which are no longer sold. While we strongly disagree with the allegations made about these earlier generation Apple Watch models, we have agreed to settle to avoid further litigation.'

The settlement includes provisions for Apple to set up a $20 million fund to compensate users who experienced the swollen battery issue, with affected users receiving payments of $20 per device, with the potential to increase to up to $50 depending on the number of claims.

The compensation is available to users in the United States who owned an affected Apple Watch model between April 24, 2015 and February 6, 2024 and reported a problem with a swollen battery by filing a complaint with customer service.

People who are eligible will receive an email or postcard informing them, and people who haven't received a notification but think they may be eligible can apply on the official settlement site by April 10, 2025.

In January 2025, Apple agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that Siri violated users' privacy.
