At the April 30, 2025 hearing between Google and the U.S. Department of Justice on the search engine antitrust lawsuit, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the company plans to enter into an agreement with Apple to use Gemini by mid-2025, and that Gemini will be available on iPhones by the end of 2025. This will make it possible to use Gemini from Apple's voice recognition assistant, Siri, and to answer more complex questions than before.
At WWDC24 held in June 2024, Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, and John Giannandrea, senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, said, 'Ultimately, we want to enable users to bring the AI models they want to use to Apple products, so they can choose the model they want to use, such as the model that's best for creative writing or the model that's best for coding. To that end, in the future we plan to integrate various AI models, such as Google's Gemini, with Apple products,' revealing that they plan to support third-party AI models including Gemini.

During the trial, Pichai acknowledged that he had been discussing AI development with Apple CEO Tim Cook, saying, 'Mr. Cook was trying to understand Google's plans and roadmap for the evolution of its AI technology, and as part of that we discussed the distribution of the Gemini app.' Cook also told Pichai that Apple Intelligence plans to support more third-party AI models in the second half of 2025.
In February 2025, it was discovered that the source code of iOS 18.4 beta contained a description of 'Google' as an option for AI models available in Apple Intelligence.

In its antitrust lawsuit, the Department of Justice is seeking to force Google to sell its Chrome business, prohibit it from paying to be the default search engine in web browsers, and require it to share search data with competitors.
On the other hand, Google has repeatedly argued that the Department of Justice's proposed remedies are excessive.

During the trial, Pichai also criticized the Department of Justice's proposed remedies, saying that 'requiring Google to share search data with competitors' (the data-sharing provision) would prevent Google from investing in research and development. Pichai called the data-sharing provision 'abnormal' and 'a de facto sale of search-related intellectual property.'
Pichai also said, 'It would be easy to reverse engineer Google Search and build something that works effectively outside of Google,' and, 'If data sharing rules are implemented, it will be impossible to invest in research and development in the way that we have in the past 20 years.'
