A review of Fujifilm's lens-integrated digital camera 'GFX100RF' that can be used as a snap camera with over 100 million pixels, with a large number of examples to show what kind of photos can be taken

The digital camera '

GFX100RF ' released by Fujifilm on April 10, 2025 is equipped with a large format sensor larger than a full-size sensor and can take photos of approximately 120 million pixels. I was able to borrow the GFX100RF, so I actually took it outside and took various photos.

◆1: What kind of camera is the GFX100RF?
The GFX100RF is a digital camera with a 43.8mm x 32.9mm large format sensor and a prime lens with a focal length of 35mm (28mm in 35mm equivalent). The exterior has a retro finish like a film camera, and the top plate is made of machined aluminum. The appearance of the GFX100RF is summarized in detail in the following article.

◆2: Check out the power of 120 million pixels
By setting the image size to 'L' and the image quality mode to 'SUPER FINE,' the GFX100RF can record photos as approximately 102-megapixel JPEG files.

When I actually took a photo, I was able to take a photo that was 11,648 x 8,736 pixels (101,756,928 pixels). The example photos in this article have not been edited except for reducing the size, and you can click on the image to see the original size before it was reduced.

Here's what it looks like when you crop out the center of the screen. Because the original pixel count is large, you can crop it out with sufficient image quality.

Below is a 560 x 420 pixel image cut out at full size. The shape of the building and the window frames are clearly visible.

◆3: You can choose your preferred style just like choosing a film
Like other Fujifilm cameras, the GFX100RF is equipped with a function called ' Film Simulation ' that can change the color and gradation of the photo. In addition to modes named after Fujifilm films such as 'PROVIA', 'Velvia', 'ASTIA', 'ACROS' and 'REALA ACE', film simulation has modes that reproduce the atmosphere of photos from the film era such as 'Classic Chrome' and 'Nostalgic Negative', so you can choose your favorite style as if you were choosing a film.

The same subject was photographed using the 'Classic Negative' method. The contrast between light and dark is clearer, and the saturation is lower.

The shopping street was photographed with 'ACROS.' According to

the Fujifilm official website , ACROS is characterized by its natural graininess and exquisite shadow expression, resembling photography with black-and-white film.

◆4: You can take pictures up close and it's easy to take pictures of food
The minimum shooting distance of the GFX100RF is about 0.2m from the tip of the lens. When shooting rice, you can still focus even if you are this close.

Even if you are sitting on a chair, you can take a picture of the whole dish as shown below. Depending on the camera, you may need to stand up to take the picture, so it is quite convenient to be able to take the picture while sitting.

'Shutter speed: 1/110 seconds' 'F-number: 7.5' 'ISO sensitivity: 3200' 'Film simulation: PROVIA' 'Image quality mode: SUPER FINE' 'File size: 57.8MB'

This is what it looks like when you switch to 'Classic Negative' and shoot.

I approached the flower and took a photo with the 'ASTIA.' The focal length of the lens is 28mm in 35mm equivalent, so you can take photos with an angle of view similar to that of the main camera on a typical smartphone.

◆5: Aspect ratio can be changed with a dial
The GFX100RF is equipped with an aspect ratio switching dial, which allows you to change the aspect ratio to any of the following: 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, 65:24, 17:6, 3:4, 1:1, 7:6, or 5:4.

I shot the video with an aspect ratio of 17:6, which is inspired by the famous analog cameras TX-1 and TX-2.

◆6: I took various photos at the Osaka Kansai Expo site.
I took the GFX100RF to the Kansai Expo in Osaka and took a few photos. First, I took a photo of the giant Myakumyaku statue waiting for me near the entrance.

◆7: I took a photo in the city at night
I took some outdoor photos at night with the GFX100RF. I shot the road from the sidewalk. The GFX100RF does not have a still image stabilization function, but you can take handheld photos at night in bright places with street lights or headlights.

◆8: Summary
When I actually tried using the GFX100RF, I found that the focal length of the lens is close to that of the main camera of a typical smartphone, so I was able to continue shooting without any trouble in choosing the composition. Also, the minimum shooting distance is short at about 0.2m, so I can take pictures of my food while sitting down or get up close and personal with flowers. Another fun point is that I can choose the style of the picture by using film simulation, just like changing the film.

The GFX100RF weighs 886g including the included hood and strap, which is quite light for a medium-format digital camera. Furthermore, it is easy to decide the composition, so you can use it like a snapshot camera by 'hanging it around your neck and moving around, and taking a picture the moment you want to take a picture.' It is an incredible camera that is 'a snapshot camera with over 100 million pixels.'

The GFX100RF is sold at the official online store for 830,500 yen (tax included). It is also sold at various camera shops and electronics retailers, and is also sold at Amazon.co.jp for 830,500 yen (tax included).
