President Trump signs executive order to allow TikTok to remain open for an additional 75 days and remain listed in app stores

TikTok was forced to choose between ceasing its service in the US or selling it to a US company, but President Trump signed an executive order allowing it to continue operating for an additional 75 days. In response to this, the App Store and Google Play have decided to keep TikTok listed. Regarding TikTok, the Chinese company that owns the service, ByteDance, had held repeated discussions with the US government and others and was almost set to establish a new company in the US, but following the announcement of reciprocal tariffs by the US, China stated that it would not approve the transaction, so the establishment of the new company is on hold.

On April 5th, local time, which was the deadline for TikTok's service in the United States, President Trump signed an executive order allowing the service to continue for another 75 days. 'My Administration has been working hard to save TikTok and we have made progress. That's why I signed an executive order to keep TikTok open for another 75 days. We hope to continue working in good faith with China. I understand that China is not very happy with our reciprocal tariffs, which shows that tariffs are the most powerful economic tool and are very important to national security. We do not want TikTok to be shut down. We look forward to working with TikTok and China to get a deal done,' he posted on social media site Truth Social.

Following the presidential order, TikTok continues to be distributed on the App Store and Google Play. News site Bloomberg reported that Apple received a letter from Attorney General Pam Bondi urging it to comply with the presidential order, but an Apple spokesperson declined to comment. It is unclear whether Google received the letter, but a spokesperson declined to comment, just like Apple.

According to reports, the deal was close to being finalized to transfer TikTok's US operations to a new company based in the US, with outside investors holding 50% of the new company, existing ByteDance investors holding 30%, and ByteDance's stake limited to 20%.

However, following President Trump's announcement of reciprocal tariffs to raise tariffs on Chinese imports to 54%, China has hardened its stance and refused to approve the deal, making the talks about the new company hit a snag. Trump himself, who said he was 'looking forward to getting the deal done,' is making the deal difficult.
