Concerns raised over DOGE's access to government systems, calling it 'potentially the most significant security breach in the history of the U.S. government.'

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established by President Trump on January 20, 2025, is an organization that, as its name suggests, aims to eliminate waste in the U.S. government and is run by entrepreneur Elon Musk. However, concerns have been raised about DOGE's active 'intrusion' into government agency systems, with the news site Foreign Policy Magazine pointing out that 'DOGE cyber attacks' and 'potentially the most significant security breach in the history of the U.S. government.'

According to Foreign Policy Magazine, DOGE members have gained the power to access and potentially control Treasury Department systems.

In addition, it has been reported that individuals 'likely to be members of DOGE' may have accessed classified data from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and copied it to their own systems. In addition, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) system, which stores detailed personal data of millions of federal employees, including some designated as national security sensitive, was breached, exposing information about the MediAid and Medicare health insurance programs.

Additionally, they are reportedly feeding data from the Department of Education into the AI model, and work has begun on the Department of Energy as well.

As the situation continued to evolve, on February 8, 2025, a federal judge barred DOGE members from further access to the Treasury Department's systems. However, if the data had already been copied, the ban may not have been a solution.

If a foreign attacker wanted to break into a government system, they would operate stealthily and carefully to remove their information and traces, but in the case of DOGE, operators with little experience and minimal oversight were operating in full public view, Foreign Policy Magazine points out.

And the worrying point is not just that DOGE could gain access to sensitive systems, but that security measures to detect misuse could be systematically dismantled.

Foreign Policy Magazine recommends that the solution to the problem is to 'revoke the unauthorized access and restore proper authentication protocols,' 'restart comprehensive system monitoring and update management,' and 'thoroughly audit the contents of system changes made during the period DOGE had access.' In addition, given the difficulty of repairing a compromised system, the resumption of comprehensive system monitoring may require a system reset.

Regarding DOGE, it has been revealed that one of the members was temporarily removed from the group for making racist remarks, and another member is a former hacker who was fired from his previous job at a security company for 'leaking company secrets.'
