OpenAI's o1 is a large-scale language model released in 2024 that is capable of complex reasoning, scientific analysis, and programming by thinking.

According to OpenAI, several AI models, including o1, will be deployed on Los Alamos National Laboratory's NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper-powered supercomputer ' Venado ,' and will be available to approximately 15,000 researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. The system is designed to drive scientific breakthroughs in areas such as materials science, renewable energy, and astrophysics.

OpenAI was already working closely with the Los Alamos National Laboratory research facility to assess how cutting-edge AI models could pose a risk to the development of biological weapons, with the primary goal of proactively identifying and addressing potential dangers associated with advances in AI.

'Building on this experience, the new collaboration plans to address even broader safety initiatives,' OpenAI said.

Specific goals of OpenAI include accelerating basic science research, developing new disease treatments, strengthening cybersecurity, innovating energy infrastructure, and detecting biological and cyber threats early. In addition, a comprehensive program on nuclear security will be developed to reduce the risk of nuclear war and ensure the safety of nuclear materials and weapons.

In collaboration with national laboratories, OpenAI will carefully review use cases and provide advice on AI safety, with security clearance to handle sensitive national security information. This is an important effort to ensure that advanced AI technology is used appropriately and safely, OpenAI said.

According to OpenAI, this initiative, which will be carried out in conjunction with its AI computing infrastructure partnership with Microsoft, will support the U.S. government's efforts to ensure that artificial general intelligence, or AGI, is beneficial to all of humanity. The company sees this as an important opportunity to steer the development of AI in a direction that is reshaping global geopolitics.
