Apple is reportedly testing a 'large-scale language model-equipped Siri' using ChatGPT, as revealed in iOS 17.4 beta code

It has been revealed that the beta version of iOS 17.4, released by Apple on January 26, 2024, contains code for an AI model called 'SiriSummarization,' which calls the API of OpenAI's chatbot 'ChatGPT.' Apple is expected to include its own AI in its next-generation iPhone OS, iOS 18, suggesting that Apple may be developing its AI with the help of ChatGPT and other companies.

Apple is testing its in-house Chatbot Siri against ChatGPT
According to 9to5Mac, a foreign media outlet that discovered the code for SiriSummarization, SiriSummarization calls OpenAI's ChatGPT API to test AI functions, summarizing text and answering questions.

It has also been confirmed that the code actually contains statements such as 'Summarize the given text' and 'Answer this question.'

In addition, SiriSummarization's system prompts also include instructions on how to respond when commands are entered via iMessage or SMS. Bloomberg
9to5Mac speculates that 'Apple's AI, which will be included in iOS 18, will not operate using ChatGPT, but will compare SiriSummarization and ChatGPT responses to prompts and use them for development purposes.'
9to5Mac also points out that, based on iOS 17.4 code, Apple is testing four AI models. Two of them are a chatbot called 'AjaxGPT' that uses Apple's proprietary large-scale language model called ' Ajax ,' and there are two versions: an offline version that runs locally on the iPhone and an online version. The remaining two are ChatGPT and Google's large-scale language model ' FLAN-T5 .'
These codes from Apple reveal that Apple is stepping up efforts to integrate large-scale language models into iOS. They also show that Apple is simultaneously developing its own AI system using Ajax, and comparing the results of its tests with ChatGPT and FLAN-T5.

iOS 18, which is reported to include Apple's plans to integrate its AI technology into services such as SIri, is expected to be announced at the WWDC developer conference in June 2024, as is the usual schedule.
