A 17-year-old male student at Lincoln High School in San Jose, California, has been charged with misdemeanor for posting nude photos of underage boys and girls on Instagram. The student's Instagram account reportedly had 1,198 followers, and many of the photos he uploaded included photos of Lincoln High School students.
The photos included captions that insulted classmates, and the photos were also stolen from numerous other students' Facebook pages without their permission. Because the students themselves are minors, their names have not been made public, and it is unclear whether they are still enrolled at Lincoln High School.
Lincoln High School Principal Matt Hewitson told parents that the school had contacted Instagram and that the photo had been removed. He also urged students to use social media appropriately, but students reported that the same photo was already circulating on another Instagram account. Instagram's management team has created new Instagram accounts for all Lincoln High School students.

In the United States, the practice of uploading nude photos to social media is rapidly spreading among young people, and one survey found that 16% to 25% of teenagers have engaged in 'sexting,' the act of exchanging sexually charged messages or images online. Police are stepping up their crackdown on uploading nude photos, fearing that it could lead to cyberbullying.
